Understanding your Social Studies Grades

Social Studies Grading Information

The letter grades are assigned as follows:

Grades will be determined by homework, in class assignments, research projects, quizzes, exams, activities and participation.

Homework:  (approx. 20%)

Students will be held accountable for:

Effort

Quality

Accuracy

Homework assignments will vary according to curriculum content, but will generally involve:    Reading and comprehension from textbook

Expect homework in Social Studies at least 2-3 nights per week..  This does not include times during the year when there is project work.

Projects:  (approx. 30%)

Projects engage students in a motivating learning endeavor and involve:

Showing an in-depth understanding/analysis of a concept

Student choice and initiative

Higher level of thinking

Following the intent of the assignment  (in most cases a rubric or a criterion sheet will be given for projects to guide students)

Projects can take the form of many products!!!  Recycled materials used on these areas of study are suggested and preferred.  Money spent on materials for a project does not equate higher grades.

Quizzes and Tests:  (approx. 40%)

Students will be administered a variety of tests and quizzes.  Yes, some of these will be “pop” quizzes.

Student Participation:  (approx. 10%)

Students can gain the full percentage by contributing to classroom topics/discussions, bringing homework assignments to class, not interfering with the learning of others.

Late Work:

Homework will lose 20% for each day late.  Each grading period I will drop your lowest daily

          homework grade.
