Summer Reading Assignment

For students going into grade 7

Behind the Bedroom Wall by Laura E. Williams and The White Mountains by John Christopher - This book is NOT out of print. It has been reissued and is available at Borders (Rte. 1, Langhorne.) If it is out of stock, they will readily order it for you.

In September, you will be tested on the two books. Please get yourself a little copybook or notebook to take notes while you are reading. Bring this to school on Monday, September 12. Write down any vocabulary words you don't know and list the characters, setting (includes time and place), plot, conflict (problem in the story), and theme (the author's message to us, the readers) for each novel. One story is set in past time while the other is in future time. Pay attention to Matilda in Fever, 1793 and to Luke in Among the Hidden. It is important to note their thoughts and how they change or grow through the books. Enjoy!

Religion

Students will learn about Church History from Pentecost to modern day church, the Ten Commandments, Peace & Social Justice, Morality and Theology. We will also learn about prayer.

First Trimester

Second Trimester

Third Trimester

During this trimester, we will study Jesus and the New Testament. The students will meet Jesus as a friend and see Him in His place and time, so that we can better understand the stories of the Gospels. We will learn the characteristics of each of the four Gospels, as well as the purposes of the Acts of the Apostles, the Letters, and the Book of Revelation.

With this knowledge, hopefully, we can build a better relationship with Jesus through prayer. Students will learn how to pray just by spending time with Jesus and listening to Him through meditation.

During this trimester, we will continue our study of Jesus and the New Testament beginning with the Infancy Narratives, Baptism of Jesus, the call of the Apostles, the parables, and the miracles. We will spend a lot of time reading and reflecting on actual scripture passages. In addition, our prayer and our relationship with God will continue to grow.

ILA

ILA consists of reading literature, writing, grammar, spelling, vocabulary development, listening and speaking.

First Trimester

Second Trimester

Third Trimester

Each student will begin the year with a baseline writing in order to assess where he/she is in the writing process. Based on this assessment, other writings in class will follow. In addition to these informal pieces, all students will complete an autobiographical anecdote, a comparison/contrast essay, and, if time permits, a lyric poem.

Students will try writing a narrative piece in the form of a dialogue. They will learn to create dialogue tags that consist of intonation cues, bodily gestures, and various synonyms for the word "said." We will also write a free verse poem in imitation of professional poets. Finally, we will look at science fiction and write a descriptive paragraph on a scene for a make-believe science fiction story.

.

Students will read various selections of short stories, poems, and nonfiction. In addition, they will read two books from the Reading Counts list and take their computerized tests. We will also be working with the summer readings through literature circles and classroom projects.

Students will also be responsible for an oral presentation on a poem of at least sixteen lines recited from memory. They will explain the author's meaning, the structure of the poem, and the use of figurative language/sensory images.

To develop comprehension skills and improve writing, students will work with sentence structure and grammar. This will include subjects and predicates, the use of completers, and different kinds of sentences. They will learn to vary sentence beginnings, to correct run-ons and fragments, to change "being" verbs to action verbs, and to find new words in the thesaurus for better vocabulary.
Guide to Grammar and Writing Practice (great site!)

To develop better reading comprehension and writing skills, the students will continue to work with sentence structure and grammar. We will work with the seven coordinators and use them to combine simple sentences into compound sentences for more effective writing. We will also use subordinators, relative pronouns, and relative adverbs to combine simple sentences into complex and compound-complex sentences for more effective writing. Finally, we will begin to use adverbials as single words, phrases, and clauses to add color to our writing.
